General Power,
SAC Commander in some of the darkest days of the Cold War, had an
assigned motor pool driver. When circumstances warranted his removal
as driver, Ted Baisden (59-61) pushed to have an armed guard as
driver for the CINCSAC. Upon approval Bobbie Church became General
Power driver. He drove for General Power until his retirement in
1964, then became General Nazzaro driver for one year. The
aide for General McConnell asked Bobbie to come to Washington
DC and drive for the Chief of Staff. Bobbie completed two tours with
the CS, then when General Ryan replaced General McConnell he
drove for him until his retirement 1972. Bobbie retired as a Sr.
MSgt. Upon retirement he spent 24 years in the Springfield VA area
where he managed 6 food franchise facilities. In 1996 he and his
wife Carolyn of 44 years moved to Lodi CA. Bobbie passed away
March 17, 1998.

various bases as my Dad, George Everett Sylvester, Lieutenant
Colonel, United States Army, trained for World War II, California,
Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, Austria...etc., she attended
Florida Southern and graduated from the University of Connecticut in

Lt. Col. Norman Porter Magers, Jr. USAF (ret)
Age 84 of Little Rock, died of congestive heart failure at home on
July 18, 2003, surrounded by his loving
family.

Iowa, on October 13, 1918. He graduated from Roosevelt High School
and studied Electrical Engineering at Iowa State College in Ames. He
was drafted into the US Army in 1941. He graduated from Officers'
Candidate School and Provost Marshal General School. As a Second
Lieutenant in the US Army Air Corps he was assigned to West Point in
1942. He served in the European Theater in World War II and the
occupation of Germany 1944-1947. He was Headquarters Company
commander in the 831 Aviation Engineers and Security Officer during
the construction of the Rhine Main Air Force Base near Frankfurt,
which was used as the main airport for the Berlin airlift of
1948.
Norm was discharged as a Captain and a
decorated war veteran in 1947. Three years later he was recalled
into the Strategic Air Command and assigned to Ben Guareer Air Base
in Morocco. He later served at March Field in California (1852-58),
England (1958-59) and Little Rock Air Force Base (1959-64) as Base

Little Rock included special security responsibilities in Central
Arkansas during the Cuban Missile Crisis. In 1964 he was transferred
to Offutt AFB, Omaha, Nebraska, headquarters of the Strategic Air
Command, where he commanded the SAC Elite Guard.
He was greatly respected by his men, and the members of the Elite
Guard gave a special farewell parade in his honor upon his
retirement in July 1966. At that time he also received the Air Force
Commendation Medal.
After retirement from the Air Force, Norm
returned to Little Rock where he worked for ten years as
vice-president and audio-visual specialist with Educators' Service

granddaughters with hand-made custom-designed doll houses. Norm and
his wife enjoyed their travel abroad and in all 50 states. In 1997
he attended the opening ceremony of the American Air Museum in

David Anthony Fasnacht was born on July 1, 1932 and
joined the Armed Forces while in Janesville, Minnesota.
He
served in the Regular Air Force.
In 14 years of service, he
attained the rank of Staff Sergeant (E5)
David was married
He began his tour of duty on July 12, 1967. (Probably
Vietnam TDY in-country date, not PI.)
On July 15, 1967, at
the age of 35, David Anthony Fasnacht perished in the service of our
country in Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam, from hostile rocket or
mortar fire.
"David arrived by air at Da Nang and his
aircraft immediately came under mortar attack. He was hit and
jumped into a ditch at the edge of the runway. He bled to
death before the attack was over. Nobody was able to get to
him."
His body was recovered.
At Clark Air Force Base
in the Philippine Islands, an old Philippine Scout barracks was
renovated by the 1st Mob in 1972-1973. It was
turned into a fine dormitory and named Fasnacht Hall in honor of
David. A marble memorial was placed at the
entry.
(This information was
compiled from the official public military record of David as well
as the remembrances of the Reverend Father Bill Komstedt who as Col.
William A. Komstedt Jr. commanded the 1st Mob in
1972-1973.)

1947 - 3 Dec 2006
We received a
letter Friday from Lavern Gardner, mother of Gregory Gardner who in
1962 at 13 yrs of age was given honorary status as a SAC Elite
Guardsman. He was suffering from Cerebral Palsy from birth. In her
letter she said he lost his fight for life at age 58.
Many of
you will remember Greg from his visit to Offutt in 1962 where he was
given a complete tour of the base, visited with General Power and
given a complete SAC Elite Guard uniform and made an honorary
member.
Though the
love and attention of Greg's mother and father he lived his life
with his parents where he continued to enjoy his hobby of collecting
military memorabilia.

“Taps have been played,
rifles fired and the flag folded. As you read this I am celebrating
my victory over death by rejoicing with my Lord and Savior, Jesus
Christ. Do not grieve or mourn for me I am in a far better place,
hopefully all of us will be united in the future. I have met
wonderful people every place I have gone and I want each of you to
know that I love you dearly and my life would have been incomplete
without you. I would like to add the people I met and worked with in
the SAC Elite Guard were the finest folks I have ever known. God
bless each and everyone.” Charlie Lee
The above is
correspondence that I received from Charlie over the past months as
he waged a valiant fight against cancer. I know that he wanted this
added to his final honors section. He felt very proud to have served
his country for 24 years but was especially proud of his association
with the SAC Elite Guard. For those of us who knew him, worked with
or for him knew that he was an exemplary individual who held the
highest standards for himself and those who worked for him.
Charlie entered the USAF
October 1957 and was first assigned with the Armed Forces Weapons
Project (AFSWP) at Bossier Base, La. After completing a 4 year
controlled tour he was assigned to Wheelus AB, Libya (USAFE) 18
month unaccompanied tour. Upon return he was assigned to Myrtle
Beach, AFB SC (TAC). In 1966 he was assigned to Da Nang AB, RVN. Upon completion of his SEA tour he received his first SAC assignment
at Clinton Sherman AFB, Ok. In 1967 he was assigned to SAC
Headquarters with the SAC Elite Guard. In 1968 Charlie was assigned
to Upper Heyford RAF Base, England.
After his four year tour
in England Charlie cross trained into his secondary AFSC
(Intelligence). Assignment in this AFSC included Grand Forks AFB and
Elmendorf AFB, Alaska, where he retired with 24 years active duty
and 2 years Army National Guard.
Charlie leaves behind his
wife of 49 years, Margaret, 3 children, 6 grandchildren, 2 of which
are currently active duty USAF.
