Elite Guard Video's: You know that you were part
of something very special being a member of the SAC Elite Guard, our history
stretches back to the mid 50's when General Le May requested that a
specially trained force of Air Policeman be the protector of the SAC nerve
center in Omaha along with a ceremonial color guard and drill team that
would represent the command for visiting heads of state, Royalty and other
visiting dignitaries. From the late 50's through the early 70's much film
was taken of visiting heads of state, drill team performance etc. John
Achelpohl was able to source much of this raw material through the A.F.
archives and has numerous videos of JFK , LBJ, Command change ceremonies,
drill team performances, funeral details etc. If you are looking for a gift either for your family or yourself here is a real piece of our history, regardless of when you were on the guard this is a real keepsake. John is clearing our his DVD collection and offering a buy one get one free. recently submitted by Col (Ret) Bob Swing who has written a definitive
history of the Elite guard based on his two tours that covers the period of
1963 through 1987. Bob drew information from other Officers and NCO's to

information from the early years written by Col (Ret) Ray Balcer and
additional information from Major Herbert Meyer. Thanks Bob for the

SAC Elite Guard 50th
Anniversary Reunion July 20-23, 2006: With fond farewells
this great group of Elite Guardsmen left Omaha with a renewed sense of
the comradery we shared while serving as guardsman of the palace and
best drill team unit in the U.S. services. There are so many
memories for me but certainly just being with all of you, putting faces
with names and enjoying time together. There are so many people to
thank, first Rich Randell and his reunion committee who worked for the
better part of two years to make this happen. Another highlight
was the dedication of the Elite Guard exhibit at the Aerospace Museum in
Ashland NE. We now have permanent exhibit that will recognize our
presence for many decades to come. I want to thank Bill Gdovic
and Jack Hatcher with their team who helped put this project together.
So many people behind the scenes that contributed to its creation and
success and to all of you who contributed financially, thank you!
Without your support this would not have happened. Thanks to the
55th SFS at Offutt for their hospitality in making us welcome on their
base and presentation of the colors on Saturday night. Finally to
our guest speaker Michael Howland our sincere appreciation for his key
note presentation of his experiences during the Iranian hostage crisis.
Soon you will receive a reunion
questionnaire, please fill it out and return so that we know how we can
improve on future reunions.

Connelly Lewis 1940 - 2006: We just
received word from daughter Linda and son Connelly Jr. that Connelly died
yesterday April 17, 2006. Funeral services are pending in Orlando
FLA, Friday the 21st. Many of you will remember SSgt Lewis from his
tour on the guard
in 66-68. I remember a very warm friendly man who knew everyone that
came through the front door and always with a smile on his face.
Should any of you who live in the Orlando area care to attend we will have
further details on the date and location. Rest in Peace

Elite Guard Historical
Perspective by Col. Robert Swing (ret): The Strategic Air Command (SAC) Elite Guard experienced
several mission challenges from the time of their formation in 1956 until
1992 when SAC was
dissolved in favor of a Unified Strategic Command. Guards were
transferred to the 55th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing (Offutt
host Wing) and continue to provide security for that Headquarters as
a continuance of the SAC Elite Guard tradition.
We have attempted to obtain historical observations from a number of our
members and their leaders. While there may some variation from one
writer to the next, we have relied on their memories, as best they recall
and have written to this historical memorandum.
Thanks to Col Swing who has
been working on this document for many months now, we have a very
comprehensive document that covers the period of 1965-1987. Col.
Swing had two tours at Offutt first was 65-70, then again
in 83-87 and was instrumental in many of the changes that
occurred during these time periods. Please follow the link on

became of Greg, we set the search committee loose to find out. and YES
they found him living in a suburb outside Cleveland with both of his
parents. The family and Greg were very happy to be remembered, and

Carole Meilahn: On
behalf of the SAC
Elite Guard Association, I
want to thank Carole for her most generous contribution to our project fund
to build a museum display for the Strategic Aerospace
Museum. Her husband, Luther, was one of the original members of
the Elite Guard, and was very
proud to have served on this silent drill team that traveled extensively
around the United States.
Carole mentioned that on his, one and only,
visit to the newly build museum, he thought that it was very nice to see,
but, was missing any representation of the Elite Guard. I am very
sorry that Luther did not live to see this exhibit, but in his memory and
all other Blue Berets that have passed, a display will be built to honor
their memory, along with all others, who were a part of this illustrious

Luther A. Meilahn
1933-2006: We just learned from Luther's wife Carole
that he passed away Tuesday Feb 7.
For those of you who may not have known him,
Luther was one of the original members of the SAC Elite Guard (1956) then
known as Detachment A.
After leaving the Air Force, Luther went on to a
career in Law Enforcement in the Omaha area. Luther was very proud
of his involvement with the Elite Guard and kept all the
papers, pictures and newspaper clippings of this unique group. While
in failing health over the past years he joined us in one of our first
reunions where he was reunited with other original members of the guard.
We pass along our condolences to his wife Carole,
daughter Phyllis and family. Luther is remembered in our
Final Honors
page. Rest in peace brother. SALUTE!
